Ambitions Unlike most Starfleet officers, he does not aspire to command the latest ship of the line. Instead, he aspires to understand the universe around him. He joined Starfleet to explore and make discoveries previous generations only dreamed about. Nick wants to be at the forefront of scientific discovery in any capacity that he can be. But, he would be lying if he said he hasn't envisioned himself in the center seat of a scientific research vessel.
Hobbies & Interests Papandreou has several hobbies and interests. He enjoys typical hobbies such as reading (especially early Federation history), music, and single malt Scotch. But, he has two primary passions.
The first is family history. For years, he has been tracing the Papandreou genealogy back through the centuries. The second is playing sports on the holodeck, especially ice hockey. He picked up ice hockey when he was a young child and never misses an opportunity to lace up his skates.

Personal History Nicholas Papandreou was born in New York City on Earth in 2357 to a loving family. His father was a Captain in Starfleet at the time, and his mother was a successful Astrophysicist at Cambridge University. From a young age, his parents stressed the importance of family and how they will always be there for each other. This was influential to him, and he carries this belief to this day.

At the age of 4, and containing more energy than a warp core breach, he discovered the sport of ice hockey, through his older brother, John. It was not a graceful start when Johnny tripped Nick with his stick, which resulted in a visit to the starbase infirmary, where his father was CO. However, he stuck with it, and soon became a very strong skater, left winger, and sometimes overly-aggressive forechecker (at least, when his brother was on the ice).

In school, he excelled. Gravitating towards the sciences, like his mother, Nick knew early on that he wanted to spend his life searching for the answers to questions individuals asked since they first developed sentience.

He followed in the steps of his father and older brother and entered Starfleet Academy in 2375, during the last year of the Dominion War. His brother, already a Lieutenant JG was gravely wounded in a skirmish with a Cardassian cruiser, and made him seriously reconsider a civilian scientific route. While recovering on Earth, Johnny reminded him of the wondrous opportunities he could be exposed to in Starfleet. Nick decided to accept entrance into the Academy.

During his first year at the Academy, the Breen attacked Earth. Papandreou and several other cadets were studying for an xenolinguistics midterm when they found themselves under attack. Before they could reach their designated shelter, the room around them collapsed and the group of cadets were trapped. One of the cadets was Ellie Bartlet, the young woman who would eventually become his wife. Unable to see or contact any of the group, he kept the wounded young woman alert as they bonded over two bonded over their shared field of astrophysics and interest in music. After spending six hours trapped, they along with one other cadet in their study group were rescued.

Things developed slowly, but steadily. Ellie with her naturally bubbly personality had concerns over how sullen and withdrawn Nick could be. But, she was able to bring out the best in him, and they pursued a romantic relationship. Since they shared a field of study, they took many of the same classes and as they completed their time at the Academy, were hoping for the same assignment to a Luna-Class research vessel at the edge of the quadrant.

As it turns out, they would get their wish. However, different vessels. Ellie served as an astrophysics specialist on the USS Io, while Nick was posted to the USS Ganymede. Due to the nature of their assignments, they would see each other very little. However, they made the most of their time together when they had it. In 2381, they were married and expecting.

In 2382, they took a posting at Starbase 718 to the Astrophysics Research Team. There, they would be able to get the best of both worlds and raise their son, Spiro, together as a family and continue their individual research. They were happy and content.

In early 2384, he earned a PhD after completing his groundbreaking research in the field of quantum fissures. It seemed like it would be a promising year, because he and his family were being transferred so he could serve as the head of the science department on Starbase 47.

Nick wanted Ellie and Spiro to leave together, but he was needed three weeks early, and Ellie was not able to take leave due to research she needed to complete. She never would. A fleet of Orion raiders attacked the base, boarded it, and stole anything of value that they could. 23 personnel were killed in the attack, including Ellie and Spiro when a plasma conduit ruptured while they were returning to their quarters.

The loss understandably destroyed Nick. He felt anger, rage, sorrow, remorse, and just about every possible negative emotion. He lost everything that gave his life meaning. Immediately, he was relieved of duty so he could mourn, but he was overwhelmed. He returned to Earth, spoke to his family, therapists, counselors, but he could not get over the loss.

Nick was an emotional wreck. But, he knew that if he didn't get himself together soon, even his career would be lost. In consultation with Starfleet Counseling, he took a six month leave of absence and began intense therapy. It was a struggle for him to talk about his emotions to strangers, but he knew he'd have to get over it to save his career. While he still struggles with this loss to this day, he has learned to live with it. He's found that regular therapy sessions, and a little drink every now and then can help ease that pain.

Upon being cleared for duty, he resumed his post at Starbase 47. He served there for six years, before feeling the itch to get back to exploring. He was chosen as Chief Science Officer aboard the USS Lexington. During his three year tour, he identified 73 new astronomical phenomena before being selected to join the USS Oracle.
